CANON POWERSHOT S5IS
BANGKOK, THAILAND Memory through photography: an exploration of how personal recollection shapes the way we see familiar places. All photos taken on a thrifted S5IS.
The following is a collection of personal photos taken on an old digicam that I purchased at a thrift store. The goal of this series was to photography my birthplace, Bangkok, in a manner that reflected how I visualised my childhood memories of the city. While appearing dark, and gloomy with some unsettling undertones, my memories of my home are full of joy, wonder, and a desire to constantly explore the beautiful city. 

All photos have been graded in Adobe Lightroom to emulate the palettes that I remember from my trips back to Thailand between 2008 (when I moved to Canada) and 2018. When I visited Thailand in 2023, I didn’t know it would be the last time I would be able to safely return due to the country’s outdated military draft. As I won’t be returning to my home country until at least 2034, these pictures serve as a reminder of my birthplace and the beautiful people that fill its streets.

Originally created as a colorful passion project two years ago after returning to Canada, I have reimagined a travel video I made, in a shortened, greyscale format. It serves as a placeholder until I create a new version with an original composition.
